Safety is important.

For yourself or your child to train in Karate properly they must partake in kumite (free fighting). Without kumite you will not learn the correct distances involved in Karate or how to apply it in a real situation. Kumite also develops a strong spirit. So with all this in mind we would like to bring up the following subjects:

  • Groin guards - this piece of equipment is compulsory. Any male not wearing this equipment should not partake in kumite. Anyone doing doing this without a groin guard does so at their own risk, as a blow to the groin can have serious consequences.
  • Hand mitts & shin pads - these pads offer some protection to the hands & legs and most importantly help reduce the chance of being cut. Kumite can be practiced without these pads in a restrictive manner, however all students should really have these pads before taking part in kumite.
  • Gum shields - these offer protection to the teeth and can be bought from a dentist or in a box which you can mould to fit yourself, Teeth are easy to chip and break and not easy or cheap to fix. This item is a must before taking part in kumite.
  • Head guards - are required for all juniors and protect them not only from heavy head contact but cracking their heads if they slip when not training on mats.

All of these items are for you or your child's safety and you should consider getting them.
